Many small inexpensive loans

This definitely is the grand-daddy of all small, inexpensive things.
And on top of that, it gets a Nobel prize as well. You can't argue with that.

Micro credit by definition is a grand example of many small inexpensive things beating Big Monolith and Deep Pocket... Grameen Bank's example drives home the point even better! (That by the way, is a wikipedia link... a neat one stop shop for the main idea.

hmmm... from my experience, i know it doesnt work everywhere. The problem is that the social sector thinks otherwise and everyone has thrown their weight behind magical microcredit without seeing whether it will work with the poorest of the poor, many of who do not even understand money that well. Barter yes, money no. And they expect these people to manage money smartly?

Sure, it may not work everywhere! to my way of thinking, mgical, silver bullet, single panacea solutions are neither possible nor desirable! And people will manage money as they see fit (not necessarily in ways that you and I may consider fit)

Having said that, I still think the micro credit idea has its uses (Well it certainly supports my obsession of many-small-inexpensive-things!! :-) )
